hi y'all,
i been reading a lot of threads here about y'all complaining the site is boring, about too many auctions left here too long, and lots of other problems. let me clue you guys in on somethin' as one of the original members of delcampe, member #301.... sebastien has been extremely generous from the start by trying to keep costs to a minimum to all the members. if you left your auctions on ebay for the length of time i have, what do you think that would have cost me or YOU? i know, a damn fortune, that's what. sebastien hasn't charged me a dime for renting his space. only a 4% fee since he started charging anything. and as for the clubs, that all voluntary. if you want the perks, you pay for them, just like when you fly first class. when the server problem came along in the u.s., he didn't come to anyone and ask for money. he thought of a solution and took it upon himself to finance in his own way. and again, no expenses out of my pocket. no fee increases or other fees. do you find that on ebay, HELL NO YOU DON'T. so when i hear someone say the site is 'boring', well, i say. 'it's an auction, not a video game.' lighten up on sebastien and enjoy what's here. and what we have. it is a great site with great support at a great price. 'nuff said.

hi randy,
thanks for the backup. i had been kind of rough on sebastien in the past year but that was a misunderstanding which is now water under the bridge. and it is quite easy to be judgemental when you don't see the 'whole' picture of what is really going on, esp. with an administration like our government today. and this happened here on delcampe. but in the end, all was explained and why. i wish our president would do the same, but then he is not as honest as sebastien. and i didn't vote for him. twice. keep up the good work sebastien and crew.

Hello Bill.
Thats a good posting.
I agree with all thast you say.
Delcape is an excellent site, and the costs of using it are reasonable.
What a pity that there are not more buyers here, and of those there are, such a large proportion are DEADBEATS ( non - pasyers)

Your posting is a very accurate account of the plus and minus of the site and I am sure Seb appreciates the praise but I am sure he is neither too discouraged by the odd negative comments nor too elated by praise. As with most sites that invite a Forum type of exchange very few members read this stuff and even fewer post. With this site the former works out to less than 0.1% and the later less than 0.3%.Keep up the great work and continue to tell it like it is!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with James................my major peeve with this site is the atrocious number of DEADBEAT BIDDERS it seem to atract.

Hi Cajun!
I've been reading your engaged posts of the last year and was more or less expecting you to jump to the barricades...
Dont' want to get into a game of words with you all, but let me point out one thing: I never said anything about increasing fees at Delcampe! I think it is excellent that Seb is able to run this site as cheaply as he does.
My problem with Delcampe - maybe my ONLY problem with Delcampe - is the possibility to endlessly repeat worthless auctions. I have never understood the logic behind this particular option. There is no problem to allow a seller to reload his auctions without additional fees, but at least make him push a couple of buttons in the process. Maybe he then remembers that a few of his items got out of stock a couple of years ago.....
And James: Ever asked yourself why there are so few serious buyers at Delcampe? Maybe we prefer to pay a little more fees for more quality..?

Hi Bill,
I also always supported Delcampe, as a buyer & a collector I find Delcampe very attractive (still talking about the website ) Easy to use. I can find at very attractive prices some cards I'd pay a fortune elsewhere and the best of it... for I have made many friends as you.
James, the two deadbeat payers you had where with no feedback and one of them had his account closed since then, I think that Delcampe can't do better than that. All auction sites have there share of Deabeats Delcampe not more than others.

hi y'all,
well, i better get another pot or two of coffee on the stove if we is gonna have a debate on all this, eh? been a long time since we has a humdinger of a long thread on the forum. and always good to see old friends converse here, no matter what the opinion is. that what free speech is all about. and from our thoughts might come some good changes here on delcampe without 'loosing' anything in the process like ebay. think about that mon ami. we have everything to gain, and nothin' to lose. it's a win/win situation on delcampe, and that's why i'm here to stay.

Postcardpiggy,
To use Cajun's words: "This is an auction, not a videogame". In an AUCTION, the value of an item is set by the price the buyers are willing to pay. When nobody wants to buy the item or pay the price the seller is asking, it should be removed from the auction or offered at reduced price.
I have items in my whatching list that are over 2 years old. I am interested but not willing to pay the price the seller is asking. I have tried to negotiate with him, but rather than lowering the price he prefers to keep the item himself but leaves the auction up "just in case".... This type of behaviour has no resemblance with an auction.

... and one more point while I'm in my "bad mood" today:
What is the point of uploading thousands of single, cheap stamps at 0.01-0.05 value when you ask 1-2 for postage and fees? Who would ever buy such an item?
You would have to combine quite a lot of these before it pays off to bid. Much better to find a stockcard or three from an old collection at a reasonable price, either here or at the "other" auction site. Problem is, again, such items are much much harder to find here than at the "other" site...
And yes, I do know how the search options work. They are a HUGE improvement, responding to a similar debate we had in this forum a couple of years ago. Still, you have to have a pretty specified search formulation to avoid getting hundreds of items you have no interest in buying unless you go here very often to search for "new since" items.

hi bjorn,
see you got a little german stubborn streak like cajun. my grandpa was german. got some irish too. mix that with my dad's french and you really got some tabasco sauce and sauerkraut kick ass arguin' sometimes (mixed with a leprecaun). but some of your comments are well taken, esp. the cheap items and an expensive shipping charge. you're right, they could be combined into lots, and sold that way. but we do have collectors here who only want a single stamp to complete a set, so we must cater to their wishes as well. remember, we do not pay the cost for the site and the fees collected are reasonable enough not to complain. if these new servers and the software are handling the job, and that seems to be happening (cross your fingers and toes), we are finally at a stable condition on delcampe. it's time to move forward. sebastien is in the process of doin' his annual survey so we will soon see the results of that with new implementation of added features on the site. you know how tight lipped he is about stuff, so be patient. and drink lots of coffee, decaffinated in your case.

Well !!!....
My 2 cents worth now...
Delcampe HAS been flooded out with auctions that are just going around and around and around, don't get me wrong, I can see it being an attractive proposition for sellers....BUT........
It's false economy !
I have just wanded down auctions in the categories I am interested in and there are postcards I have been looking at, over and over again for the past year since I have started on here !
So, after page after page of the same stuff I just give up, and yes you can say I am bored with it.....so potential sales I would have been interested in have gone away with my boredom
It may be the Scottish/ Irish / English in me which might upset some with my straight talk.....but there you have it
Repeat auctions for stuff not sold is great for sellers because they feel they are getting a good deal with free relists....but.for buyers it's a nightmare
And this comes from a Irish Scot Brit who has sold over 18,000 postcards on the 'other site'

hi paul,
not being a PC collector, i couldn't tell you beans about what is repetitious or not. but i am sure it is the same in philately. but it is as i said before, we ain't having to pay for the rent here, so we ain't really got nothin' to gripe about. FREE LISTING. you don't get that on ebay, do you? like i also said, be happy with what we have, it could be a lot worse with increased fees and other nasty 'ebay' like crap. why do you think so many people are here? i knew a good thing when i saw it and that was over 6 years ago. have a great week.

"Whine and cry" ... "German stubborn streak"... My, my, I thought the whole point of a Forum was to discuss topics and suggest solutions you feel would make Delcampe even better.... Silly me!
Delcampe might be a nice place to BE, but it tries very hard to be a commercial market place also, and I feel it still has some way to go in that direction. Cajun, with 464 items sold in over 6 years it is clear that you ain't making a living out of this. Myself, I am an exhibiting collector looking for high-quality items to improve my exhibit. As long as I don't find them here, I go elsewhere. That is a pity because I know the ARE high-quality items in there. Somewhere.
I think Delcampe has to develop a clearer profile: Either a more serious commercial auction site or a friendly collector's web site for bantering with old friends.... There a lots of sites out there that offer free auction services for members.
Again - I am NOT calling for increased fees, just require a little effort from the sellers to review and renew their auctions once in a while.
Direct question for the Staff: You often advertise with the increasing number of Delcampe members. Can you give statistics for the number of completed auctions the last years? Preferably also completed auctions per member and the success rate (auctions completed divided by total number of auctions running).
I am a professional scientist, so if the statstics prove me wrong I will rest my case!

I think the anawer here would be for Delcampe to introduce a new search categorie....something like "New items, not been relisted".....That would keep everyone happy....newbie buyers who can still search through all the old listings and moaning old devils like me who are fed up of seeing the same auctuions
There is another postcard site I use (not THAT other one we all use) who have the same problem with these free re-lists and I have seen sellers ....good sellers leave or let their auctions run out because they fell into this false sense of security with these free relists and they just relisted it over and over again....their NEW stuff wasn't found because it was swamped down with the old stuff no one wanted.....sales dropped so they stopped using it
I really like Delcampe....it's a more friendly place than that other site....but things really do need to change otherwise I can see no future

hi bjorn,
well, i was in nuclear medicine technology for 20 years so i guess i was a scientist too. but i am retired now and don't need to make a livin' doin' this. i do it as a hobby to augment buying stamps for my collection. and i have made a few dollars here and there. and have met a lot of nice people from around the world in the past 15 years i have been selling on the internet. and i think that is what i like the best, esp. on delcampe. i don't find that too much on ebay. i had my fling on yahoo canada, but they shut that down. i never sold on ebay, too expensive. and other sites just don't cut the mustard to what delcampe offers for free. and at one time in the beginning there were no charges or fees. i know, because i was there. and maybe i should change the title of this article to 'MY 10 CENTS WORTH' for an adjustment to inflation, just to satisfy the scientific community.
hi y'all,
i been reading a lot of threads here about y'all complaining the site is boring, about too many auctions left here too long, and lots of other problems. let me clue you guys in on somethin' as one of the original members of delcampe, member #301.... sebastien has been extremely generous from the start by trying to keep costs to a minimum to all the members. if you left your auctions on ebay for the length of time i have, what do you think that would have cost me or YOU? i know, a damn fortune, that's what. sebastien hasn't charged me a dime for renting his space. only a 4% fee since he started charging anything. and as for the clubs, that all voluntary. if you want the perks, you pay for them, just like when you fly first class. when the server problem came along in the u.s., he didn't come to anyone and ask for money. he thought of a solution and took it upon himself to finance in his own way. and again, no expenses out of my pocket. no fee increases or other fees. do you find that on ebay, HELL NO YOU DON'T. so when i hear someone say the site is 'boring', well, i say. 'it's an auction, not a video game.' lighten up on sebastien and enjoy what's here. and what we have. it is a great site with great support at a great price. 'nuff said.

Hi Nanook99,
I'm present in a Hungarian site and there are the same percentage (or higher) of non payer bidders in a same categories. We have to care of honest bidders and sellers they are 9 times more than the others.

Randy,
You are right, there are many worthless items from someone's point of view but that worthless items could be a gem for the others.
I had many items for one year or even 2 years on auction just because there were nobody interested in that document containing a family name ...when I sold it for 3 EUR they came from 200 km by car to pick the document...a lot of similar stories can I tell.
I bough here a lot of paper money and there were sometimes much cheaper than I expected it. A lot of postcards if you want to buy from a dealer in your town you will get much higher than here.
If I do not collect something that cannot means that is a wortless item.
I've been reading your engaged posts of the last year and was more or less expecting you to jump to the barricades...

Hi Bjorn,
I found here in Delcampe more than 200 buyers in 45 days.
I sent out 200+ shipments in this period.
Much more than I expected it before restarting selling.
I used Delcampe for buying only.

Hi Bjorn,
There is a possibility on Delcampe to send an offer for that items what you have on whatching list.
That is similar like at the flea market.
Many cultures many bargain styles...you just remember how different is in Germany or in Egypt to buy someting.
Many Italians or Romanians sent me lower prices as their offer, for them that is a normal bargain and there were sometimes 10-15% differents from the starting price, sometimes they offered a half price.
Try to send to sellers your offer and you will be very suprised that there will be a lot of sellers accepting your offer...that means you can buy that items for the price what is worth for you.
