200th Anniversary of the Albertina Graphics Collection
Founded by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen in 1769, the Albertina is a collection of prints, drawings, etchings and miniatures. The number, extent, artistic standard and systematic completeness of the stocks made this museum a unique cultural institution on aworld-wide scale. The Albertina is one of the biggest and most important museums of its kind. This also concerns its long-standing history of scientific research. The Albertina stocks are composed of several vast collections including the collections of Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, the Imperial Copperplate Cabinet and the works acquired since 1920. These stocks are divided into several subgroups: drawings, prints, special collections and the museum library. The history of Albertina exhibitions began in 1873 with a comprehensive show on the occasion of the World´s Fair then held in Vienna, which was followed by a total of 200 exhibitions to date. This eight-part series of special issue stamps presents a short overview of the Albertina´s treasures.
