III International Geotextile Convention in Vienna 1986
The Third International Geotextile Convention took place from April 7-11, 1986 in Vienna´s Hofburg Palace under the auspices of the International Geotextile Society. It was organized by the Austrian National Committee of the International Society for Civil Engineering. The term "geotextile" refers to those materials used mainly in geotechnical, that is, structural engineering (soil mechanics, transportation, water resource, etc.). The decision to hold this event in Vienna of all places was no coincidence, for Vienna is considered the birthplace of soil mechanics engineering. Karl von Terzagi, considered the founder of this technical discipline, was born in Prague in 1883 and died in the U.S. in 1963. He taught at the University in Vienna and even before the First World War began exploring the connection between the behavior of a building versus its subsoil. Although the term "geotextile" was first given meaning in 1977 at the Paris Conference on the "Use of Textiles in Geotechnical Engineering" (which was the first International Geotextile Convention), the use of animal skins and blankets in the foundations of buildings and streets can be traced back to antiquity. It was the development of synthetic, non-biodegradable materials which finally lead to a breakthrough, since these materials can withstand the strains of plant growth, soil, and water.
