Baroque Frescoes

This special issue stamp series showing various Baroque frescoes is dedicated to two great masters of Austrian fresco painting who managed to overcome and further develop their Italian models. Paul Troger, the master of monumental fresco painting, and his disciple, Franz Anton Maulpertsch, the only artist to exceed Troger´s visionary power, were ideally suited for the artistic medium of mural painting, which requires rapid and confident brushwork. For these two Austrian masters, the luminosity and brightness of colours achieved through pure fresco technique seemed to be the essential prerequisite for expressing their artistic concepts. Troger and Maulpertsch proved their mastery of this technique and varied it according to their respective designs. The basis used was a style of painting on wet lime cast developed in Italy, in which the plaster is applied in two layers. The rough, first coating is covered by the light-coloured finishing coat which contains equal parts of sand and lime. The painter then works on this still moist surface, using lime water as fixing agent. This safeguards the typical immediate, insoluble bond of paint and background surface, as these two layers dry simultaneously.
