400th Anniversary of Saint Petrus Canisius

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of this important Doctor of the Church, the Post & Telekom Austria has brought forth a special issue stamp and has chosen the "Canisius Altar" in the Innsbruck Seminary of Theologians as it´s motif. Peter Kanis (latinized: Petrus Canisius) was born on May 8, 1521 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. In those days the city had a German character and a seat and a vote in the German Royal Council. Canisius chose the priesthood and was ordained in Cologne. He became a professor at the University of Ingolstadt and in the year 1550 became it´s rector. As a teacher, his life´s journey lead him to Vienna, Innsbruck, and many other important European cities. He imparted special status to the Jesuit college in Innsbruck. Canisius spent the twilight of his life in Switzerland, where he founded his last Jesuit college. Canisius died on December 21, 1597 in his 77th year. Petrus Canisius was beatified in 1864 and canonized in 1925 and named Doctor of the Church. Because he went to endless trouble in re-establishing church unity, he is described as the "second apostle of Germany after Bonifatius" (Pope Leo XIII). When the Innsbruck Diocese was established in 1964 he was elected it´s patron.
