125th Anniversary of the University of Agriculture Vienna

The Agricultural College was founded 125 years ago. It has offered farming and forestry since 1872 and 1875, and cultivation engineering and water supply and distribution have been offered since 1883. The university received the doctoral right of title "Dr. rer. Nat. techn." in 1906; yet the title of "Engineer" (today Dipl. Ing.) has been in existence only since 1917. The study of crops and biotechnology (known earlier as distillation engineering) was brought to life in 1945. Landscape design and upkeep (earlier known as landscape ecology and creation) was added after the college was re-titled university in 1975. Fields of research involving technical conservation, run in collaboration with the Technical University of Vienna, have been in existence since 1984. The University of Agriculture is the only university in Austria representing agricultural and forest sciences, cultivation engineering and water supply and distribution, crops and biotechnology, as well as landscape design and preservation. The university sees itself as a place for teaching and researching replenishable resources which are a prerequisite for human life. It´s duty is to secure these basic principles through the diversity of fields it offers to preserve these for future generations. It strives to augment knowledge of the lasting ecological and economic benefit of natural resources in a harmonious cultural perspective by combining natural sciences, engineering, and economics. The university attributes it´s highly-regarded status to various elements: studies offered based on fundamental subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, geology and soil sciences, meteorology and climatology, and the introduction of socio-economic and legal disciplines into the actual agricultural sciences. The Post & Telekom Austria honors the achievements and scientific standing of the University of Agriculture, the University of Life, with the issuance of a stamp commemorating it´s 125th anniversary. The stamp´s depiction is symbolic.
