Nordic Ski World Championships - Ramsau am Dachstein
For Ramsau - situated at the foot of the Dachstein - the last nordic ski world championships of this millennium represent the climax of years¿ long endeavors and advancements in the nordic discipline. Ramsau, Styria¿s largest tourist destination with 2,700 inhabitants and roughly 6,500 guest beds, has much to offer in both summer and winter. In emphasizing a combination of sports, nature and culture at these nordic ski world championships in Ramsau, the organizers hope to have developed a concept which can serve as an model for such large-scale sporting events even in the new millennium. The motto of the 1999 Nordic Ski World Championships is: "Ecological World Championships in harmony with sports, nature, and culture". Thus, the conscious decision was made not to construct a W-120 ski-jump, since one already existed in nearby Bischofshofen only 45 kilometers away. The ski-jump there was leased immediately to the Ramsau World Championships. The Ramsau World Championships were not only intended to be ecologically-friendly, but also laden with various "shortcuts" for spectators. Since the facilities are located directly in the center of the city and the individual competitions take place at such close proximity, there will be an area reserved for pedestrians for the first time! These world championships are meant to set new standards and demonstrate new ways in which large-scale winter sporting events can be held in harmony with the environment. To do justice to the motto of the 1999 Nordic Ski World Championships (sports-nature-culture) and to emphasize cultural and social aspects, a comprehensive and particularly diverse program of activities is offered in addition to the athletic events. To celebrate this very special occasion, the Post und Telekom Austria has issued this special issue postage stamp valued at AS 7. The stamps motif was designed by Christian Attersee.
