Europe 1974
In line with this year´s CEPT theme "sculpture", Austria has chosen to feature on it´s special issue stamp the statue of King Arthur from the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I in the Hofkirche in Innsbruck. With this ensemble of figures the church houses the most important monument of the Western world. The focal point is the memorial upon which the emperor kneels in prayer facing the altar. Reliefs by the Dutch Master Alexander Colin recount the emperor´s colorful and eventful life. Bronze figures known as "Schwarze Mander" keep wake. They are his ancestors and predecessors as legend has it, King Theodoric the Great, "Dietrich von Bern" and King Arthur, whose statue is especially cherished by visitors to the Hofkirche. Yet why is the imperial tomb in the middle of the Austrian Alps and not in Vienna? Maximilian considered Tyrol to be the heart of the German Reich, and so he viewed Innsbruck as the next capital, which is where he wanted his tomb. Along with numerous other buildings, Maximilian planned for a gigantic monument to be completed within six years in the Hofkirche according to Pliny the Elder´s aphorism "forefathers to escort the dead". Eventually 21 busts of the emperor, 23 statuettes of Habsburg family holies, and 28 larger-than-life bronze figures were completed and placed around Emperor Maximilian´s tomb.
